Last night, I watched a video that really spoke to me (https://youtu.be/LTNVCEBcCj0). In the video, Pastor Francis Chan, a former pastor of a megachurch, asked the question, “What is one practical thing I can do to improve my prayer life?”
It is always important to ask ourselves this question because we want to make sure we are always working on improving the gift that God has blessed us with. Sometimes we forget that having this direct form of communication with God is a privilege that many people don’t have, specially in places where they are being persecuted for their faith.
The interesting part about Pastor Chan’s response to this question was that it was such a simple response, yet it is so difficult to do. He simply said to, “be humble.”
Being humble is something that, due to our sinful nature, is very difficult for us to do. It is something that, according to God’s Word in Colossians 3:12, we have to be intentional about; “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
Pastor Chan mentioned that when we come before God, we should demonstrate the humility of Romans 8 where we come before God not knowing what to pray. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Romans 8:26
Ideally, we should always ask God for the words to pray and what to pray about. Coming before God in prayer is a humbling experience that we have been blessed with, but many times, we don’t have the words to express or don’t feel adequate enough to pray so we choose not to.
Prayer is simply a form of communication with our One and Only Savior, Provider, Friend, Protector, Healer, Creator, Helper, Counselor….
Prayer is the direct path and connection between us and our Lord…..
Prayer is meditating on Him, His goodness, His Word and His blessings….
Prayer is being healed through our communication to Him….
Prayer is what the world needs when they find themselves in darkness….
When we have a hard time coming before the Lord in a humble way or we don’t have the words to express to Him about how thankful we are for his love, mercy and grace, let’s ask God to help humble ourselves before Him and to help us find the words to express what is in our hearts. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” James 4:10
We know that God will always give us the Words to speak and that He will continue teaching us the wonders of His ways. “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.” Psalm 25:9
